Submission to the Disaster Recovery Funding Framework (DRFF)

ALGA has lodged a submission on the Australian Government’s proposed Disaster Recovery Funding Framework (DRFF) reforms, which aim to simplify disaster recovery funding and introduce more consistent support arrangements across Australia.

While supporting efforts to streamline the system, ALGA has called for reforms that remain flexible, recognise local circumstances and do not leave councils or communities worse off. Key recommendations include maintaining local decision-making, improving the timeliness of recovery funding, ensuring councils are not exposed to additional financial risk, and providing long-term investment in disaster resilience. The submission also highlights the importance of co-designing reforms with local government, given councils’ frontline role in supporting communities before, during and after disasters.
