2018 Stay Smart Online Week

Running from the 8 October to 14 October 2018, Stay Smart Online Week has been a reminder to all Australians to stay smart online.

This year's theme is 'Together we can reverse cybercrime'.

In 2017, more than 6 million Australians experienced cybercrime and the numbers are rising. This is a global issue and it is important that strategies are put in place to protect from cybercrime.

Here are some tips coming out of Stay Smart Online Week to help prevent cybercrime:

  • Use strong and different passwords for your accounts, and use two-factor authentication
  • Make sure you update your software – new updates can include extra security
  • Be careful before connecting to public Wi-Fi. Consider if you need to access banking and emails on public Wi-Fi
  • Phishing is one of the most common cybercrimes. If an email or text message looks suspicious, do not click any links or open attachments.
