Council views sought on revising driverless car trials guide

The National Transport Commission is updating its Guidelines for trials of automated vehicles in Australia, developed with Austroads and first published in 2017.

The guidelines support nationally consistent conditions for automated vehicle trials, and help road transport agencies manage trials in their own state and territory, among other things.

Potential changes being canvassed including improving administrative processes; alignment with the future commercial deployment framework; and clarifying the application of the guidelines to other technologies.

To ensure the changes benefit trialling organisations and road transport agencies, the NTC has published a discussion paper and is seeking submissions from local councils, road managers and others regarding the proposals outlined therein.

Submissions will be accepted until 4 July, and can be lodged on line at the NTC’s homepage.
