President’s Update – 17 October

Win! 16 councils will share in more than $50 million in federal funding through the latest round of the Government’s Bridges Renewal Program.

Councils are responsible for more than 22,000 bridges across the country, many of which are old and no longer meet modern requirements.

The Bridges Renewal Program plays a key role supporting councils to upgrade these facilities, and ALGA will continue to advocate for more federal funding for councils to maintain our roads, bridges, cycleways and footpaths.

Congratulations to all of the winners in this year’s Local Government Awards, which were announced by Minister McBain last week.

Councils are delivering great outcomes in every community across Australia and it is always fantastic to see this work acknowledged.

We are just a week out from our new Government’s first Budget, and ALGA has urged the Government to maintain the vital funding it provides to Australia’s 537 councils.

In the lead up to this year’s election ALGA secured an additional $250 million for councils through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, and I look forward to seeing this included in next week’s Budget.

Finally, it’s not too late to book your spot at our 2022 National Local Roads and Transport Congress in Hobart, Tasmania from 2-3 November. I hope to see you there!
