President’s Update 27 January 2023

New dates for 2023 ALGA Annual Conference

I’m delighted to announce our 2023 National General Assembly (NGA), incorporating the Regional Cooperation and Development Forum, will be held in Canberra from 13-15 June.

The NGA is the biggest annual local government gathering in the country, and this year’s event is shaping up to be the best yet.

We are continuing to work with the Federal Government to incorporate the return of the Australian Council of Local Government (ACLG) as part of the 2023 NGA, and I look forward to sharing more in the weeks ahead.

Housing Legislative Package submission

ALGA has lodged a submission for the Federal Government’s Housing Legislative Package, which will provide a framework for the government’s recent housing announcements.

Across Australia, affordable housing is a massive issue for councils and our communities.

ALGA is a signatory to the Government’s Housing Accord, and we will continue to work through this with the government to address housing challenges, including advocating for policies, funding and initiatives to meet the needs of local governments and communities.

Australia Day award winners

Finally, a big congratulations to all the Australia Day Honours recipients this year, including those recognised for outstanding service and contributions to local government.  Well done!
