SA food waste strategy focused on developing circular economy

A new strategy setting out how Adelaide councils could divert more food waste from landfills, potentially saving $6.8 million annually, has been published.

The Green Industries SA strategy, Valuing our Food Waste, is part of the South Australian Government’s pivot towards a circular economy.

It integrates policy measures, behavioural change actions, and support for industry to address the estimated 200,000 tonnes of food waste sent to landfills each year in South Australia.

Green Industries SA says it will work with councils to pilot more frequent organics collections, improving access to compostable bags, requiring new developments to have sufficient areas for three-bin waste collections, and promoting three-bin systems use at council events.

State Environment and Water Minister David Speirs says local governments, businesses, and the SA community all have roles to play in addressing the estimated 200,000 tonnes of food waste sent to landfills each year in South Australia.

The strategy will also look to boost the uptake of kerbside organics collections in “opt-in” metropolitan Adelaide council areas and improve home-based food waste diversion in regional areas through worm farms and composting.
