Smart street lighting and electricity metering update

New federal government guidance has been published on how smart street lighting can be metered under the National Electricity Market.

The federal Department of Industry, Science, Energy, and Resources (DISER) briefing paper provides an update on progress with the rule change proposal and next steps, and also provides information on other approvals that smart lighting suppliers and operators would have to ensure are in place in order to successfully install and operate these new products.

As part of work under the National Energy Productivity Plan, DISER and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) have sought to address regulatory barriers to the rollout of efficient smart street lighting by working towards a rule change proposal for an effective, efficient, economical, technology-neutral and optional metering regime for minor energy flows.

This paper provides an update on progress with the rule change proposal and next steps, and also provides information on other approvals that smart lighting suppliers and operators would have to ensure are in place in order to successfully install and operate these new products.
