The Tasmanian and south-west Western Australian members of the national Regional Development Australia (RDA) network have formally agreed to establish a collaborative working relationship designed to support economic growth in their regions.
Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government Dr John McVeigh said the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by representatives of RDA Tasmania and RDA South West marks a significant shift in the way the RDA network operates.
“For the first time in Regional Development Australia's history an MoU will be signed to connect two RDA committees together in an exclusive partnership that will enhance regional growth in both communities,” Dr McVeigh said.
“Despite being on opposite sides of the country, these regions have similarities such as the range of products they produce, the industries in each region, and tourism. The ongoing communication and exchanges about potential business opportunities between RDA Tasmania and RDA South West will benefit both communities.
“The key to this arrangement is that, due to the large distance separating them, the two regions rarely compete in the same markets.
“As a result, those involved in sharing information and ideas would not be undermining their competitive advantage.
“If successful this could be the first of many cross-country RDA partnerships.”
